Tiles are the basic building blocks of the maps in a Pokemon game, and they can make a big difference in the look and feel of your hack. What You Will Need
Before you start, you will need the following tools and resources:
A Pokemon ROM that you want to hack. You can use any generation of Pokemon games, but we will use FireRed as an example.
An emulator that can run your ROM. We recommend VisualBoyAdvance.
A ROM hacking tool that can edit maps and tiles. We recommend AdvanceMap.
A tile editing tool that can convert images to tilesets. We recommend TileHelperAdvance.
An image editing program that can crop and edit tiles. We recommend Microsoft Paint or GIMP.
Some custom tiles that you want to use. You can find many public tiles on DeviantArt or other websites. Just make sure to credit the original artists if you use their tiles. We will use Magiscarf's tiles as an example.
Step 1: Crop and Convert Your Tiles
The first step is to crop and convert your custom tiles to a format that AdvanceMap can use. To do this, follow these steps:
Open your image editing program and crop the tiles that you want to use. You can use any size of tiles, but they must be square and have a multiple of 8 pixels (e.g. 16x16, 32x32, etc.). Replace the background color with a neutral color that is not used in the tiles. We recommend pink.
Save your cropped image as a PNG file.
Open TileHelperAdvance and load your image file. Click on \"Convert tileset\" and save the new image and palette files. Make sure to save the palette file as an AdvanceMap file (either 1.92 or 1.95, depending on what version of AdvanceMap you are using).
Step 2: Add Your Tiles to AdvanceMap
The next step is to add your custom tiles to AdvanceMap and replace some of the existing tiles with them. To do this, follow these steps:
Open AdvanceMap and load your ROM file. Select a map that you want to edit. We will use Pallet Town as an example.
